Letting Go of the Job Title You Used to Be
Career Adaptability — Career Pivoting · ~4 min read
There’s a specific kind of quiet grief that shows up in a career pivot, and it rarely gets named directly. It’s not about the practical logistics — the resume, the networking, the new vocabulary to learn. It’s about the identity attached to the old title. “I am a teacher.” “I am an accountant.” “I am the person who runs operations.” When the role changes, that sentence stops being quite true anymore, and something in that shift can feel like a small loss, even when the pivot itself is fully chosen and genuinely wanted.
Most advice about pivoting skips this part entirely and goes straight to tactics — networking, resumes, transferable skills. All useful. All incomplete on their own, because the identity question underneath tends to resurface anyway, usually at inconvenient moments: introducing yourself at an event, filling out a form that asks for your occupation, catching yourself starting a sentence with the old title out of habit.
The more useful version of that identity sentence isn’t tied to a title at all. It’s built from the underlying qualities that made you good at the old role in the first place — the judgment, the care, the specific way you approached problems — separated from the specific job that happened to be the container for those qualities at the time. Those qualities don’t require the old title to remain true. They travel with you into whatever you do next, whether or not the new title sounds anything like the old one.
If you’re in the middle of a pivot and something about it feels like loss alongside the excitement, that’s not a sign you’re doing it wrong. It’s just what it feels like to update a sentence you’ve been saying about yourself for years. Give yourself room to feel that, and then notice what’s actually still true underneath the title that’s changing.
