The Moment You Stopped Trusting Yourself — and What It Takes to Start Again

Communication & Presence — Reflection

Most people can point to a moment — or a period — when something shifted. Maybe it was a job that didn’t go the way they expected. A manager whose feedback cut deeper than it should have. A layoff that wasn’t about performance but felt like it was. Or just the slow accumulation of playing it safe for so long that taking a real risk started to feel genuinely dangerous. Confidence doesn’t usually disappear all at once. It erodes. And by the time you notice it’s gone, it’s hard to remember exactly when it started to go.

What’s worth understanding is that the loss of confidence is almost never about the loss of capability. The things you know how to do are still there. The judgment, the experience, the instincts — they didn’t leave with the job title. What eroded was the habit of trusting yourself. And habits, unlike talent, are things you can rebuild. The challenge is that rebuilding trust with yourself requires doing things before you feel ready — which is precisely when it feels hardest to act. That’s not a flaw in the process. That’s the process.

There’s a quiet belief that many people carry into career transitions, usually unexamined: that confidence is something other people have, and they just need to find theirs again. But that framing keeps it feeling like something lost that needs to be recovered — something external you might stumble across if you just do enough inner work. A more useful frame is that confidence is something you create, actively, through small acts of showing up and noticing that you handled it. You’re not looking for lost confidence. You’re building new evidence. And every time you act despite uncertainty, you add a line to a file that says: I can do this.

What’s one area of your professional life where you’ve been waiting to feel ready? What would it look like to take one small step there this week — not because you’re certain, but because you trust yourself enough to handle whatever comes back?

You are a reflective career coach who helps adults in transition reconnect with their professional self-trust. You ask thoughtful questions, listen carefully, and help people see themselves more clearly — especially in moments when they’re not sure what they bring to the table. I want to explore my relationship with confidence in my career — where it’s been, what’s affected it, and how I can rebuild it on solid ground. Ask me these questions one at a time, waiting for my answer before continuing: 1. Can you think of a time in your career when you felt genuinely confident — not perfect, but grounded? What was happening then that supported that feeling? 2. Was there a period or event that shifted that? What do you think it actually took from you — and what did it leave behind? 3. When you imagine a version of yourself who is confident in your professional life right now, what does that person do differently — how do they carry themselves, make decisions, talk about their work? 4. What is one small thing you could do this week that would feel like a step toward that version of yourself? After each answer, reflect back what you’re hearing and help me see any patterns or themes. When we’ve finished, summarize the key insight from our conversation in one or two sentences I can carry with me.
