The Person You’d Trust With Anything — And Why

Professionalism & Work Habits — Reliability · ~4 min read

Think of one person in your life — work or otherwise — who you’d hand almost anything to without a second thought. Not because they’re the most talented person you know, necessarily. Because if they say they’ll do it, it gets done. If they can’t, you hear about it early enough to adjust. There’s no managing required, no checking in, no quiet contingency plan running in the back of your mind.

Sit with what that actually feels like on the receiving end. It’s not dramatic. It’s a kind of ease — the mental weight you don’t have to carry because you already know how this is going to go. That ease is what reliability actually buys the people around you, and it’s easy to underestimate how rare and valuable it is until you notice it’s missing.

Now consider the opposite: someone whose talent you respect, but whose follow-through you’ve learned to hedge against. You still work with them. You might even like them. But there’s a small tax on every interaction — the extra check-in, the buffer you build into the timeline, the backup plan you quietly keep. That tax is invisible to the person paying it out, and it’s the exact thing your own unreliability quietly costs the people around you, whether or not anyone ever says so out loud.

The honest question worth sitting with this week isn’t just “am I reliable.” It’s more specific: where, right now, is someone paying that small invisible tax because of you? Not out of malice or laziness — usually just because a commitment slipped through the cracks, or a “yes” was said too quickly, or a heads-up that should have gone out never quite got sent. Naming that isn’t about guilt. It’s the first honest step toward being the person someone else would hand anything to.
