Build Your Circle of Control Map
Career Adaptability — Navigating Uncertainty · ~5 min read + 25 min exercise
When something uncertain is hanging over your career, it’s easy to spend most of your energy on the part you can’t influence. This exercise takes about twenty-five minutes and gives you a clear, visual map of where your energy is actually worth spending right now.
Step 1 — 5 minutes
Name the uncertain situation
Write down, in a sentence or two, the specific situation that’s currently uncertain for you — a pending decision, an unclear timeline, a possibility you’re waiting on. Be specific: not “my career” in general, but the actual live question you’re sitting with right now.
Step 2 — 10 minutes
Sort into three circles
Draw three columns: Control, Influence, and No Control. Under Control, list everything about this situation that’s entirely up to you — your preparation, your effort, your own decisions. Under Influence, list what you can affect but not decide alone — a conversation you could initiate, information you could request. Under No Control, list what’s genuinely out of your hands — someone else’s timeline, a decision that isn’t yours to make. Be honest here; most people put too much in “No Control” that actually belongs in “Influence.”
Step 3 — 5 minutes
Circle your top three
From the Control and Influence columns, circle the three items that would make the most real difference if you acted on them this week. These are your actual leverage points — the places your energy will do something, regardless of how the uncertain part eventually resolves.
Step 4 — 5 minutes
Pick one and act today
Choose one of your three circled items and take a concrete first step on it before you close this exercise — send the message, block the time, make the note. Small and immediate beats large and someday.
Coming Back to This Map
Uncertain situations tend to shift over time, and so does your map. Revisit it every week or two while the uncertainty is live — not to eliminate the unknown, but to keep your energy pointed at the parts of the situation that are actually yours to move.
