The Permission You’ve Been Waiting For Isn’t Coming

Professionalism & Work Habits — Initiative · ~4 min read

Think back to a time you saw exactly what needed to happen — and waited. Maybe you had the idea in the meeting but let it pass, figuring someone more senior would say it. Maybe you saw the problem forming weeks before it broke, and told yourself it wasn’t your place. Maybe there’s something in your life right now — a conversation, an application, a change — that you’ve been quietly waiting to be invited into.

Most of us learned to wait somewhere. A workplace where speaking up got punished. A season of life where keeping your head down was the safest available move. A story about ourselves — “I’m not the kind of person who pushes” — that was really just a description of one chapter, not the whole book. The waiting made sense once. The question worth sitting with is whether it still does.

Here’s the reframe: permission, in most of adult working life, is not granted — it’s assumed by the people who act. The colleague who “somehow” ends up leading things was never handed a permission slip. They noticed, they started small, they told people what they were doing, and the role grew around them. From the outside it looks like confidence. From the inside it’s usually just a decision, repeated: I won’t wait for somebody else to be somebody.

You don’t owe anyone boldness, and not every gap is yours to fill. But if there’s one thing you’ve been noticing for weeks — at work, in your search, in your life — it might be worth asking what exactly you’re waiting for, and who you imagine is going to provide it. The permission you’ve been waiting for isn’t coming. The good news is you never actually needed it.
