Run a 15-Minute Initiative Audit

Professionalism & Work Habits — Initiative · ~15 min exercise

This week’s deep dive drew a line between noticing and acting — and pointed out that most people stop at noticing. This exercise helps you find the gaps you’ve already noticed, pick one, and cross the line from “someone should” to “I started” this week.

The Exercise

  1. List five things you’ve noticed that need doing. Broken processes, unanswered questions, missing documents, follow-ups nobody made. If you’re in a job search, list search actions you’ve been meaning to start — a reach-out, an application, a portfolio fix. Don’t filter yet; just list.
  2. Cross off anything that isn’t yours to touch. Someone else’s clearly-owned work, or changes that genuinely require authority you don’t have. What’s left is your initiative territory.
  3. Circle the one item that takes under 15 minutes. Not the most important one — the fastest one. Speed matters more than size for building the habit.
  4. Do it today, and narrate it in one line. Fix it, draft it, send it — then tell the relevant person: “I noticed X, so I started Y.” One sentence. That line is what turns quiet effort into visible initiative.
  5. Book the next one. Pick a second item from your list and give it a day this week. Initiative becomes a reputation through repetition, not through one good deed.

Notice how it feels to act without being asked — especially any hesitation about permission. That hesitation is the real subject of this exercise. The more often you act small and communicate clearly, the quieter it gets.
