What Change Is Really Asking of You

Career Adaptability — Change Readiness · ~4 min read

There’s a specific kind of disorientation that comes with career change — even change you technically chose. The role you knew how to do well no longer exists in the same form. The version of yourself that felt competent and settled is, for the moment, unavailable. And underneath the practical questions — what do I do next, who do I talk to, what’s the plan — there’s usually a quieter question that doesn’t get asked out loud: who am I, if not the person who was good at the thing that just changed?

That question deserves more attention than it usually gets. Most advice about navigating change focuses entirely on the practical layer — next steps, action plans, timelines. Useful, but incomplete. Underneath the practical work, change is also asking something more personal: whether you can hold your sense of competence and worth a little more loosely than “the specific thing I used to do.” That’s not a small ask. It’s uncomfortable precisely because it’s real.

The reframe that tends to help most: change isn’t asking you to discard who you’ve been. It’s asking you to separate the person from the role — to notice that the judgment, the relationships, the resilience, and the capability you built doing the old thing are portable. They travel with you into whatever comes next, even when the specific title or task doesn’t. What feels like loss in the moment is often, on closer look, closer to relocation.

If you’re in the middle of a change right now — chosen or not — the question worth sitting with isn’t just “what’s my next step.” It’s “what have I built in myself that isn’t actually tied to the thing that’s ending.” Naming that, specifically, is often the first real evidence that you’re more change-ready than you feel right now.
