There’s a question that sits underneath all of this talk about networks and relationships and career strategy — and it’s worth naming directly: What kind of professional do you want to be known as? Not in terms of your title or your output, but in terms of how you show up for the people around you. Because your professional reputation isn’t only built in the work you produce. It’s built in every interaction you have — every message you send, every time you follow through on something, every time you give credit or offer a hand to someone who needs it.

Most people think about their career mostly in terms of what they want to get — the next role, the next opportunity, the next step. That’s natural. But the professionals who tend to have the most satisfying and sustainable careers are often the ones who spend at least as much time thinking about what they contribute and give as what they receive. Not because they’re selfless in a naive way, but because they understand that generosity builds trust, and trust opens doors that no job application can. The people who refer you, advocate for you, and create opportunities for you are the people you’ve invested in first.

Here’s what’s worth sitting with: your network is, in some ways, a mirror of who you are professionally. The people in it reflect your values, your field, your reputation, and the kind of colleague and human being you’ve been over time. If your network has gone quiet, it’s not a judgment — it’s just information. Networks don’t maintain themselves. They reflect the attention you’ve given them. The good news is that attention is always available. You can start giving it today.

You are a reflective career coach who helps adults think about the kind of professional they want to be — not just the roles they want to hold. You help people connect their values to how they show up in professional relationships. I want to reflect on my professional reputation and how I show up in my network — so that my networking feels like an authentic expression of who I am rather than a strategy I’m performing. Ask me these questions one at a time, waiting for my answer before continuing: 1. How do you think the people who’ve worked with you would describe you as a colleague? What words or qualities come to mind — and are there any gaps between how you think you’re seen and how you’d like to be seen? 2. Think of a professional relationship you’re proud of — someone you’ve genuinely supported or invested in. What did that look like, and how did it feel? 3. What kind of professional do you want to be known as over the next five years — not in terms of title or achievements, but in terms of how you treat and relate to the people around you? After each answer, reflect back what I’m sharing and gently probe what matters most. When we’ve worked through all three questions, help me write a short personal statement — three to four sentences — describing the kind of professional I want to be known as. Something I can keep as a north star for how I show up in my network.
